An expressionist figure composition in pastel by Swedish artist Bertil Andersson (1923-1990) featuring a heavily stylised human figure rendered through bold forms, vibrant colour, energetic strokes and raw textures. Sweden, mid-century. Pastel on paper, signed lower right. Presented in its original white frame behind glass. ARTIST BIO Bertil Ingemar Andersson, born February 28, 1923 in Östra Tollstad, died November 9, 1990 in Linköping, was a Swedish painter and illustrator. Andersson was primarily autodidact (self-taught). He developed his foundational artistic techniques through independent study and evening courses organised by the Workers' Educational Association. He began dedicating himself entirely to fine art in the late 1940s. Andersson's early portfolio centred heavily on traditional, realistic depictions of people, local portraits, landscapes, and floral still lifes. As the mid-century Scandinavian modern movement matured, his style evolved into highly expressive, tactile, and abstract figure compositions. Alongside his studio work, he spent much of his life working as an educator and taught regular courses in drawing, painting technique, and art history. Andersson was highly active in the regional art circles of Östergötland, winning numerous grants and cultural accolades throughout his active decades. Andersson received the Östgöta Journalist Association scholarship in 1955, the Östergötland County Council cultural scholarship in 1962, together with Lennart Spong and together with Gunnar Janser in 1963, the Mjölby Art Association scholarship twice, the Vreta Monastery municipality scholarship twice, the Östgöta Art Association scholarship in 1972 and a state work scholarship in 1975–1976. Andersson is represented at Östergötland Museum, Östergötland County Council, Linköping Municipality, Mjölby Municipality and Norrköping Municipality.
