A striking mid-century ceramic plaque by French artist Paul Azéma (1929-2017).  A wonderfully tactile work of brutalist abstraction, featuring organic circular forms in vivid molten orange, red and yellow, overlapping long linear forms of dark green, set against a richly textured background of dark grey and blue. The artist's use of lava stone and mixed glazing has created visual interest, depth and dimension. Signed to two edges. France, 1960s/70s.

Artist Bio Paul Azéma (1929–2017) was a French painter and ceramic artist born in Bessan, southern France. Coming from a distinguished family of artists, Azéma began painting at an early age and exhibited his work internationally. His work included both decorative ceramics and larger-scale architectural commissions, including a ceramic-on-lava mural in his native Bessan. Associated with the celebrated pottery tradition of Vallauris in the south of France, Azéma was known for his vibrant, highly expressive ceramics. Azéma combined bold colour, stylised forms and richly textured glazes, producing decorative dishes, wall pieces and sculptural works. His distinctive ceramics reflect the experimental  and colourful spirit of post-war Vallauris pottery, with examples incorporating both glazed terracotta and lava stone.
