Portrait of a female nude by Swedish artist Gustaf Sjöö (1902-1969). In this early-to-mid-century expressionist painting a female nude figure stands in an upright posture, her arms pulled behind her back as she faces toward the right side of the frame, projecting a quiet, defiant strength. The model's form is rendered with thick, textural layers of paint giving depth and character and the palette is muted and earthy. The background is a stark dark brown and black expanse, creating a heavy contrast that emphasises the illuminated figure.

Oil on board, signed lower left. Presented in its original wooden frame.

ARTIST BIO
Gustaf Arvid Sjöö (1902–1969) was a Swedish painter, draughtsman, and printmaker. Born in Kronoberg County, he trained under Carl Wilhelmson and at the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts. Known for portraits and landscapes, his works are housed at the Moderna Museet in Stockholm.

Sjöö lived and worked primarily in the Småland region of Sweden, with his main base in Växjö . His artistic repertoire extended beyond traditional canvas work to include graphics and illustrations. Over the course of his career, he traveled abroad to expand his artistic techniques. Sjöö's portfolio generally covers figurative landscapes and townscapes, interior studies and detailed portraits.

Sjöö’s pieces are frequently included in major regional and national art archives in Sweden. His work is permanently represented in several public institutions, including Kalmar Art Museum, the Växjö konsthall, and the Moderna Museet in Stockholm.
