Portrait of a Woman by Ivan Jordell
A wonderful mid-century female portrait by Swedish artist Ivan Jordell (1901–1965).
The artist uses angles and space beautifully in this painting, giving our subject movement within her environment as she is captured in a sideways glance, framed in shadows. She has stylised orange-brown hair framing her large, dark eyes that draw our intrigue. Her face is soft, her expression captivating. Her outfit of green and blue vertical stripes brings a visual lightness and pop of colour against the muted yellow-green background.
Gouache on board, signed. Sweden, circa 1940s. Framed behind art glass in its original gold wooden frame.

ARTIST BIO
Ivan Per Erik Jordell (July 19, 1901 in Katrineholm, Sweden - September 7, 1965 in Malmö) was a Swedish painter.
After studying at the Skåne School of Painting, Jordell's career took off. During the 1930s, together with his fellow students Hans Larsson, Nils Nilsson and Bertil Landelius, he was influenced by the so-called Bornholm Group and its way of working with muted tones and modulating color schemes (Bornholm Art Museum).
At the end of the 1930s, Jordell found the motif that would define his work; the lonely isolated person with empty eyes staring into the unknown, often set against a background of only a hint of character, without contact with the things or the space around them.Jordell liked to paint people on the margins of society. The form and drawing are summary, but the color is often dimly glowing. Jordell's people are never individualised; they are portraits of a state of mind rather than of an individual.
In the 1950s and 1960s, his artistry shifted to also including still lifes, landscapes and cityscapes. These are also distinctive works, but it is in the portraits of people that his art becomes completely unique - a chapter of its own in 20th-century Swedish art history.Shipping for this item to U.K. mainland is £20.
