  • A modernist mid-century still life painting entitled 'Gult Bord' (Yellow Table) by Swedish artist Clas Walter Sundman (1908-1963). A wonderfully vibrant composition tending to the naive, with a playful use of scale. Oil on canvas, signed and dated '61. Presented in its original cloth and wood frame. On verso it features its original exhibition label from the eminent Liljevalchs art gallery in Stockholm.

    ARTIST BIO
    Clas Walter Sundman, born November 25, 1908 in Ringarum, Östergötland county, died February 17, 1963 in Norrköping, was a Swedish painter, draughtsman, decorative painter and color consultant. 

    Sundman trained as a craft painter in 1927–1932 and then worked as a decorative painter for several years before switching to artistic painting. He studied art with Johan Winberg 1939–1941, Otte Sköld 1944 and Jöns Thulin 1955–1956 and during several study trips to Italy, France, Germany and Spain. Together with Nils Bringfelt he exhibited at the Norrköping museum and separately he exhibited in Linköping, Sundsvall and at the ÅetÅ center in Stockholm. In 1955, he participated in a competition for decoration proposals for public buildings in Norrköping with his composition Bevingad luft.

    Sundman's art consists of still lifes, portraits and landscape depictions from Öland and Jämtland done in oil as well as mosaic compositions. Alongside his own creation, he carried out monumental assignments in schools and painted churches. Sundman is represented at the Norrköping Art Museum and Norrköping City Vocational School.
