    A large, colourful mid-century abstract painting on canvas by listed and collected Swedish artist Hans Walter Sundberg (1922-2004). Signed, titled 'SEMESTERSTUGAN' ('Holiday Cottage') on verso. Presented in its mid-century linen and gold frame.

    Vintage painting with some old repairs to small tears in canvas and small puncture holes to edge. Some slight age-related sagging to canvas. Please refer to photos.

    About Hans Walter Sundberg 1922-2004

    Hans Walter Sundberg was born in Stockholm on 12th February 1922. He was a Swedish painter.

    Sundberg studied at the Konstfack (University College of Arts, Crafts and Design) in Stockholm in 1940 and then at the Otte Sköld School of Painting between 1945 and 1946. The school was founded in 1929 by Åke Pernby (1902-1981) and Joseph Otte Sköld (1894-1957). In 1949 it became the Pernbys målarskola (Pernbys painting school). In 1948, Sundberg was studio assistant to the Swedish graphic designer and typographer Akke Kumlien (18841949).Sundberg 1st solo exhibition was at Galerie Acté, Stockholm in 1947. He then exhibited at Galerie Moderne (1951) and Sture Gallery (1956). He participated in group exhibitions at Galerie Acté and Galerie Moderne in 1948, an exhibition in Borgholm (on the island of Öland) in 1954 and at 'Aspect 61' held at Liljevalchs konsthall (an art gallery located on the Djurgården island in Stockholm, which was designed by architect Carl Bergsten and inaugurated in March 1916) in 1961. Sundberg had a joint exhibition with the Swedish painter Ake Andersson (1922-1988) at Galerie Bleue, Stockholm in 1966.

    Examples of Sundberg's work are held in the collections of the National Museum (Nationalmuseum) and the Museum of Modern Art (Moderna Muséet) in Stockholm and the Institut Tessin (also known as the Centre Culturel Suédois) which is a museum in Paris dedicated to the history of Franco-Swedish artistic exchanges.

    Sundberg died in 2004, aged 82.
