  • A mid-century landscape painting depicting Herta, Gotland by Swedish artist Björn Hallström (1916-1981) entitled “Hamn I”.  There is a gentle, understated beauty in this compostion, with the artist's lovely use of perspective and a soft, earthy palette. Oil on canvas, signed and dated 1956 on verso. Presented in a faded silver/grey wooden frame.

    Painting in good vintage condition, and may have some light signs of ageing and wear. Lovely old frame has some old repairs to back and some expected signs of use and ageing.

    ARTIST BIO
    Björn Nilsson Hallström, born February 13, 1916 in Stockholm, died December 27, 1981, was a Swedish painter, draftsman and graphic artist. He was the son of manager Nils Hallström and Elsa Smith and married the first time in 1943 to Bibi Carlsson and the second time from 1969 to Gertrud Wieselgren.

    Hallström studied for a short time at the New Painting School in Stockholm and during study trips to France and Spain. Separately, he exhibited at Brunkeberg's art gallery in 1942 and at Gummeson's art gallery in 1948. Together with Carl Riise and Harry Johnsson, he exhibited at Lilla Galleriet in Stockholm in 1955 and together with Eira Thelander at Nerman's art gallery in Norrköping in 1944. He participated in group exhibitions with Sweden's general art association and the Swedish Artists' Association at, among others, the Artists' House and in the National Association for Visual Arts traveling exhibition.

    Together with his wife, he traveled around Europe to paint several destinations in France as well as in Bergen and Lofoten in Norway. His art consists of still lifes, flowers, figure compositions and landscape paintings. At his death, his wife donated a number of pencil drawings made in 1981 with motifs from the island of Kos in Greece to the Parthenon Committee . Hallström is represented at the Modern Museum, Malmö Museum, Gustaf VI Adolf's collection, Västerås Art Museum, Sundsvall Museum, Östersund Museum, The State Council for the Arts, Stockholm County County Council, Södermanland County Council, Östergötland County Council, Skaraborg County Council, Sweden's General Art Association, as well as in several municipalities.
