Modernist Nude Painting - 'In the Sauna' by Erling Johansson

A stunning modernist composition by Swedish artist Erling Johansson (1934-2023) entitled 'I Bastun' ('In The Sauna') - a portrait of a female nude. A painting that captivates with wonderful movement and intriguing stylistic expression, it features a beautiful palette of soft pinks, blues and greens with pops of bright yellow.

Oil on canvas, signed and dated 1969. Titled on verso. Presented in its original simple wooden studio frame.

ARTIST BIO
Joel Erling Roland Johansson , born January 11, 1934 in Sarvisvaara , Gällivare parish, died September 5, 2023 in Umeå district, was a Swedish painter, filmmaker and sculptor. Johansson studied at the Academy of Arts in Stockholm 1956–1961 and at Akademi Ateneum in Helsinki 1962–1963 and during study trips to Russia, Greece and Italy. Separately, he exhibited at, among others, the Academy of Arts , the Artists' House , the Galerie Moderne, the Dalarnas museum in Falun, Linköping's museum and Norrbotten's museum .

Johansson carried out public decorations in Stockholm, Kiruna, Malmberget, Haparanda, Boden and Gällivare. His art consists of portraits , where he divides the people's energy fields into colorful facets, as well as monumental art and artistic short films. For 15 years he was a teacher of portrait painting at the Gerlesborg School and for a period a substitute for Georg Suttner at the Academy of Arts in Umeå . Johansson is represented at the National Museum, the Modern Museum, the Kalmar Art Museum and in Gustav VI Adolf's collection. In 2007, Johansson was appointed an honorary doctorate at Luleå University of Technology .
